The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office reported a major disturbance broke out around 9:30 p.m. Saturday during a spring break party known as Deltopia that drew a crowd of about 15,000 people. By early Sunday, officers had regained control after using chemical agents and foam projectiles to disperse the crowds in a process that took several hours, authorities said. The violence erupted after a UC Santa Barbara police officer was hit in the head with a backpack that held large bottles of alcohol, authorities said. During the arrest that followed the officer's injury, a crowd gathered for several blocks and pelted officers with objects that included rocks, bricks and bottles, authorities said. Authorities said the situation was declared an unlawful assembly and soon escalated into what the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office called a major disturbance and an emergency situation. Members of the crowd ripped up stop signs, lit several small fires and damaged property, including several law enforcement vehicles, authorities said. At least five more officers were injured, authorities said, with one hit in the face with a brick and two hit in the hand with bottles. To deal with the situation, local authorities requested help from various law enforcement agencies in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. The Ventura County Sheriff's Office said it sent about 30 officers, the Oxnard Police Department sent about 10 and the Ventura office of the California Highway Patrol sent about 10. The Sheriff's Office said smaller agencies in Ventura County also might have responded to the request. By 2.am. both Oxnard police officers and sheriff's deputies had cleared, officials said. Earlier, Oxnard Police Department spokesman Randy Latimer had confirmed the city was responding to the aid request, saying at least seven officers were being sent. Freelance photographer Mischa Lopiano said he followed a convoy of law enforcement vehicles from Ventura County into the Santa Barbara area. Just before 1 a.m., he said they'd passed Santa Barbara on the way to Isla Vista, which is adjacent to UC Santa Barbara. He said the convoy included about 15 squad cars and a SWAT vehicle. He said that when he reached Isla Vista, it was mostly calm, although there was a strong law enforcement presence on the streets. About 18 people were arrested during the disturbance, authorities said. Throughout the course of the day and evening, more than 100 people were arrested and at least 44 people were taken to hospitals, including about 26 during the disturbance, authorities said. © 2014 Ventura County Star. It is an environment that has been allowed to continue to flourish for years. there are plenty of really nice colleges around the country that are good examples of leadership and control. They can have our tuition dollars. The cops need to be there to deter fights, vandalism, rapes, etc... but when a crowd reaches that size, they ought to suspend enforcement of victimless alcohol-consumption "crimes". Issuing 100 citation for open containers is not worth escalating the risk of sparking a confrontation. Huntington Beach has the same problem with big crowds at their annual Surf Festival. Every year, the rioting starts with some young idjit resisting arrest for public drunkeness. It would be smarter to let the kid finish his beer and then haul him away after he passes out. 9:50 a.m. When it comes to destroying property and meyhem while supposedly having a good time, I just don't get it. In the 70's when I was in college we used to have similar events we would never see anything like this, in fact CSUN, there was always stuff going on at Devenshire Downs and never was there a riot or police called in like this.
